Passing Through

Some people in our lives come and go
But it is us who decides who’ll stay
In the time we invest
In the tears we shed when we think no one’s watching
And the ones that can make us smile even when our hearts are breaking

These are the people who make us think
Who make us consider their worth and while in our lives

Are you so lucky?
Have you got yourself one?
Some of us spend our lives searching
And we never find the one
Who sings the song of our heart incomplete

My heart is not the boring read that beats in the everyday
Love will come when I find the one
Who bleeds my blood in his words

Social Media

She lives her life in images and status updates
She clings to the words of her favourite celebrities
Her emotions are defined by her ships
And her career by her connections

She lives her life on a screen
She doesn’t know what it’s like to live
To feel true warmth
Not the burn of an artificial, electronic intelligence
On her lap

Love is between characters of her ship
Something she has decided is not for her
But how can she say that
When the experience she feels
Aren’t her own

Media connects us
But disconnects us from what is most important

Would you rather watch your child grow and learn in your arms?
Or read about it off a screen?

Just Another Day

Prompt: make the ordinary extraordinary

I can try and try
But it will never be enough

I can think and think
But it will get me nowhere

I can look and look
But never find you

I see the world as it really was
As it really is

I see the world through a rose-coloured glass
As it really is

The ordinary is so ordinary
That we don’t bother to look
To try
To think
Or to feel

People are born
And people die
Everything is ordinary
Until it happens to you

A person is just a stranger
Until they are your child
Until they are your friend

Nothing matters
Until I try
Until I think
Until I look
And until I feel

And love is just another hopeless fantasy
A dream
Pathetic and desperate
Until you fall in love

A poet is a worthless idealist
Until you meet her

And a sonnet hurts most
When you realize your love is unrequited

Life is objective
And subjective
Life is ordinary
And extraordinary

This is a boring
And a cheater’s way
To show the brightness of each of our days
Are just daily occurrences
Until it happens to you

Nothing and no one is extraordinary
Until you accord it that honour

The Season of Life and Death

I sat lonely
I sat pretty
Overlooking that which once was
All my memories
All the vitality
And dead
Reflected in the stillness of the air

But there is beauty in death
As there is in life
Though death is shrouded
In fear
In apprehension
And in all that is unknown

But yet
So is life
And yet
It is so highly cherished

Science tells us:
There is nothing to fear
After all they are chemicals
Giving way to chemicals
Controlled by electrical impulses

And so nature turns from life
To be born again
To live from death
To be reborn

And here I sit
Day after day
Lonely and pretty
And watch the seasons turn

Where did all the Passion go?

Lately I’ve been so tired
So bored of and with life
Replaced by responsibility
Weighed down and burdened by obligations
Duties to other people
To burn with a hard gem like flame
I wish it was easy to me as you say
But my heart is heavy
My lungs filling up
I’m drowning in the everyday

Where did all the Passion go?
Passed on
To another generation
But will they remember to smile after they’ve seen the world?
Or will they become like me?
